Growing a more self-sufficient, intentional home—one garden, one project, and one small change at a time.
We’re a family of five living in a semi-rural home in Massachusetts, learning how to build a more self-sufficient lifestyle through gardening, native beekeeping, DIY projects, and mindful home practices. Curiosity, continuous improvement, and a deep love for nature guide everything we do. Our goal is to create a home that nurtures our family while respecting the environment around us.
After nearly two decades in Massachusetts, we’ve learned that working with the land is an ongoing practice—not a destination. We’re originally from Southern California and Washington State, and the transition to a colder, seasonal climate came with a learning curve. Gardening here looks very different in a colder, Zone 6 climate, and it pushed us to slow down, observe, and work more closely with nature rather than against it.
Raising our three boys in this environment has shaped our priorities. We care deeply about teaching them where food comes from, how ecosystems work, and how small daily choices affect the world around them. From organic gardening and native pollinator support to simplifying our home and tackling practical DIY projects, we’re constantly learning and adapting.
Our home is where creativity meets practicality. We test new techniques, streamline systems, and share what works—and what doesn’t—so others can learn alongside us.
How It All Started
Our journey toward self-sufficiency began with six fruit trees.
At the time, life was busy and disconnected. Long commutes, full-time work, daycare runs, and exhausting evenings made it easy to lose touch with nature. We planted gardens most years, but they rarely thrived. Truthfully, neither did we.
Then came 2020. Like many families, we found ourselves suddenly working from home while caring for young children. Supply chain disruptions and empty grocery store shelves made us realize how dependent we were on systems we couldn’t control.
Two years later, with another child joining our family, we committed to living with more intention. We made raising mindful, eco-conscious kids a priority and began taking meaningful steps toward self-sufficiency—growing more food, cooking more from scratch, and learning how to support the natural systems around us.
Those first fruit trees sparked a curiosity about pollination, which led us to raise native bees. Watching those small but mighty pollinators thrive inspired us to dive deeper into organic gardening and thoughtful growing practices. From there, the ripple effect expanded into many areas of our home life—better organization, simpler routines, and a more intentional approach to what we bring into our home.
What started as a small planting project became a cycle of learning, growth, and continuous improvement that still guides us today.
This blog is our way of sharing that journey—our wins, our lessons, and everything in between—as we work toward a more grounded, intentional way of living.
